About as downscale as a Tahoe casino gets, which is pretty dang upscale as far as we're concerned. The Horizon isn't nearly as nice as its nearby neighbors. Plus, it currently has no table games, just slots.
Room Quality: The Alpine Tower rooms are slightly nicer and slightly more expensive than the Aspen Tower rooms. We're not sure exactly why, because they both claim to offer views of the lake or mountains or forest. You can shell out a load more and get yourself an "Elvis" suite, which comes complete with a pool table. Just don't pass out on the toilet after overdosing on pain killers.

Service Quality: They're not out to impress you with their high-quality service. They figured that putting their casino and hotel right next to one of the most beautiful lakes in the country was enough, they don't want to also have to cater to your every whim.
What You Get Bottles of in the Bathroom: Ooh-la-la! Gilchrist and Soames shampoo, soap and lotion. Aren't you Mr. or Ms. Fancy?
Clientele: During the winter months, it's people who are rich enough to take ski vacations, but not rich enough to afford to stay at Caesars. Actually, this is what it's like all year round.
How's the Pool? They boast the largest outdoor pool in Lake Tahoe. Sure, but try to haul your jet-ski in there. They'll bust you quicker than Superman in a 3-legged race with Captain America. Seriously, this is a nice pool, as nice as they get in Tahoe.
Table Games: No Table Games.
Machines: Starting at nickels and climbing all the way up to $5, they have plenty of machines to take your money. Most of them are slots, of the older, reel variety. Some of the multi-game video poker machines offer full-pay video poker, but usually only at the dollar level. Make sure to look closely at the tables, because not all the varieties of games -- even at the same machine -- are full-pay. Good news, Sigma Derby fans! They have one here, so get your handicapping skills sharpened.
Cocktails? If you're playing and greasing the waitress's palm, you'll get your drinks.
Who Gets Comps? You can play the big slots, if you want, but what are you hoping to win? There are better hotels and restaurants to be comped to in South Lake Tahoe.
Four Seasons Coffee Shop: You might think from the name, that this is the finest coffee shop in the world. Well, it's not. It's strictly average fare, at a strictly average price. Don't worry, no jacket required. Josh's: The Horizon's "Gourmet Room." Meat and Seafood. The decor is very old school, with big booths and crazy chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Oh, and just because they say gourmet doesn't mean the food is really unique or delicious, though. Don't say we didn't warn you. Town Square Buffet: It's big buffet, with a Mexican, Chinese and International station, featuring Prime Rib. Like most buffets in the area, it's only open for dinner Saturday through Monday, and brunch on Sunday. What about those of us who like to stuff our faces on Tuesday morning? They've got a Starbucks. What a clever idea.
Aspen Lounge: Live lounge bands Thursday-Sunday nights. Golden Cabaret: Most nights it's something like impersonators or other low-production cost shows featuring. Horizon Stadium Cinemas: First-run movies in very nice theaters with that stadium seating the kids love. Seriously, there are a lot of kids here, mostly local teenagers. |
